She kicked a piece of gravel with the toe of her boot then ground it, with a little too much enthusiasm for casualness, into the substrate. “Really? And when you won Leader, did you or did you not kick whole families out of Clan and make a whole bundle of not-negotiable laws?”
“To clean Clan up, Bliss. To stop the deaths, the drug trafficking. You know that. Hell, you lived it.”
“You did if for power. How you acted afterward is proof.”
He fisted his hands. “I didn’t chase Leader for power.”
“You’re lying to yourself, nobody else.”
“I fought for savior for the Katoom Clan. Someone had to take down that drug pusher Dempster. He wouldn’t abdicate. And I only killed him because he shot me in the back.”
“I guess we see your reasons differently.”
“You are always welcome back. Be part of Clan.”
Her laughed was so bitter it chilled him. “Clans are corrupt. Full of illegal elements to force those under a Leader do as they say or lose their homes, income, lives. I’m ashamed of what you became.”
