I hope you understand our need to strictly follow orders on work visas in Brazil. I have all assurances that the proper paperwork is in transit. You will of course be allowed to proceed based on my recent phone conversation. I hope your being detained here at customs will not incline you to grade us poorly in this matter when you speak with your sponsor.”
Petra smiled slightly as she reassured, “I don’t think the issue will come up, but if it does I don’t believe it will warrant additional details.”
The supervisor, now somewhat relieved, added, “I understand that a car and driver are waiting for you outside. I have been asked to help get your bags and act as your escort.”
He extended his hand to indicate the way, then gathered up the luggage and led the way.
Once they were out of earshot of the regular customs agents, the supervisor said in a low terse voice to Petra, “Why didn’t you tell me you were here at the request of the Minister of Energy and Thiago Bernardes? You will explain, please. I was not hostile to you, only the circumstances under which you came to this country. All of this could have been avoided if only I had been notified, but I understand the need to maintain state secrets. Again, please forgive me.”
Petra added a warm smile of understanding as she promised, “When I am engaged by a client, I am to maintain client confidentiality. This meant I could not tell all the reasons that I was here. We were both at a disadvantage in our first meeting. Our next meeting will of course not have this issue.”
As they reached the car, they were greeted by the driver who accepted the luggage from the supervisor.
Petra then asked, “Since you have been so very kind, sir, please allow me to return the favor. I might recommend that you change your shirt? The one you are currently wearing seems quite wet from perspiration.”
And with that she got into the car which then left the area.
