I sense her looking at me, then suddenly she kisses my cheek and squeezes my arm tight.
“What’s that for?” I ask.
“Just saying thanks for tonight. You’re the best company I’ve had in a while.”
“You’re welcome. Same here, actually. It’s been a rough week so far. I needed this…”
“I hear you. Hell, under different circumstances, I’d say this was the best first date I’ve ever been on.”
We both laugh nervously, and then share a moment, locked in each other’s eyes, savoring the endless unspoken possibilities that are trying their hardest to fill the space between us. The alcohol continues to work on me, mellowing me out. Everything feels perfect. Too perfect. That’s probably why it’s not real. Just a temporary fantasy. A short-lived alternate reality.
She rests her head against my shoulder as we continue gazing at the one beautifully clear section of the night sky.
