Anthony could hardly believe he already reached home as he arrived to the friendly greeting of the personnel at the security gate. Entering the gate seemed like stepping into a different world of peace, quiet and tranquility. The noise of city traffic replaced by the chirping of birds and calming views of antelope grazing peacefully on the deserted golf course fairways. With the setting sun it made the most beautiful picture, though this time he didn't even notice.
Jane's BMW parked in the garage was a good sign.
"And, to what do I owe the honor of my husband arriving this time in the afternoon?" Jane welcomed him at the door, smiling.
"Do I need a reason to come home to my lovely wife?" he chirped back.
"I guess not, but then I also know you better than that, come on, out with it."
"Well, as I am sure you spent hours preparing a gourmet dinner, how about I save you my surprise for later. I am sure I'll find a bottle of bubbly to celebrate with."
"Well, well, sounds like you won the lottery. Sorry to disappoint you on the dinner, how about we have your bubbly with a toasted sandwich."
"In that case, I am just going to take a quick shower and then I am going to treat you to the best dinner in town."
Still protesting she had an appointment Anthony already headed for the bath room, his clothing trailing behind him, stripping as he went. Her meeting was not that important and besides, seeing him this exited stirred her curiosity. Well aware she wouldn't extract anything from him otherwise, she called her client to reschedule.
What would it be this time? She wondered staring through the window into the fading daylight over the golf course. Anthony sometimes headed off on a tangent and came up with these brain waves which normally only lasted a short while before dying a quiet death. This time though it seemed different, she wondered if she had ever seen him this excited before.
"Okay, you win, but I warn you, I just canceled an important meeting with a client, and if this does not live up to it, you will pay." Jane teased as he stepped from the shower.
"I can assure you, this will compensate for losing all your clients for the rest of the year and besides, if you play your cards well, you may just have a new client coming up. You better get going I am ready and only waiting for you. As usual..."
"Well, judging from you, this is special and no lady can prepare for a special occasion in five minutes, you should've called and warned me, move out of my way now so I can prepare." she responded playfully pushing him out her way.
In the lounge Anthony selected his favorite Neil Diamond, "Hot August Night" CD and made himself comfortable, preparing for the wait which he expected to be at least an hour.
To the sound of Porcupine Pie in the background, his mind drifted back to the project. If he nailed this one, he would be counted in the company of the big guns. This may be the first of many...
Or would it?
For the first time, an eerie sense of doubt crept into his mind.
Could I actually do this?
This was bigger than he originally anticipated, did he really have the ability? Would he be able to muster the resources he needed to do this job? He dealt with the big world here, if he did not perform on this one, rather than boosting his career, this may be his ruin. Had he been too hasty in this? Did he bite off more than he could chew?
With these questions still milling through his mind, Anthony got jerked back to the present by Jane's voice next to him.
"And now, has my excited husband fallen asleep on me, come, wake up, I am starved."
"Hey, that's quick; I thought I may as well catch a nap preparing for the long wait."
"And, am I sufficiently presentable to be seen in public with the new future millionaire?"
"You look lovely, as always."
"Yeah, yeah, you only say that because I asked"
Getting up he took her in his arms and kissed her passionately until she eventually wiggled out of his embrace...
"Hang on mister, if you continue like this I don't think we are going to make dinner tonight."
Outside, at the car after opening the door for her Anthony more serious embraced Jane once more.
"You do look lovely this evening and even though I do not say this often enough, I do love you very much."
