The door clicked and slid opened. Toemeka leapt out, firing at the soldiers pouring into the administration area. Rebel gave her cover as she ran to the desk Zac was crouched behind. “Thanks for coming back for us, Zac,” she said.
“Sorry it took so long to open the door.” Zac leaned out and repeatedly fired at the soldiers while the rest of the Kameets ran for shelter.
An energy beam hit Cassie in the chest. She buckled as blood spread across her blouse. A moment later, Daiki was hit and he screamed in pain as he fell to the floor.
Toemeka suppressed the urge to go to them, tightening her grip on the laser rifle; she had to stay focused on the battle.
Zac lobbed a grenade into the middle of the soldiers. A loud boom filled the air and the floor vibrated.
Toemeka yelled, “Rebel, open the door to the prison.” Rebel punched in a code and the door slid open.
Michio and the Kameet prisoners ran through the door. “Grab weapons,” Michio said to the Kameets behind him. “Then head to the landing bay.” Michio snatched a red beamer off a dead soldier.
Zac tore into the hallway yelling, “This way!” Most of the Kameets ran after him. Tulsa Sural knelt beside Cassie. “Hang on, sweetheart. I’m gonna get you out of here.”
