I’ve always considered myself an honest man and a patriot, willing to sacrifice for the American way of life. Now, to maintain those ideals, I must break an oath of secrecy concerning a covert submarine mission that happened in the spring of 2008.
While working as the chief of staff for Stan Miller, the senior senator from Minnesota, a situation arose in which the President of the United States requested my assistance. As a result the Secret Service expedited my security clearance through the Office of Personnel Management from Secret to Top Secret/Special Compartmented Information. I was also given a Yankee White, a special designation that allowed me to work directly with the president. At that time I became aware of a substantial security threat to peace in eastern Asia, which has the potential to disrupt regional peace and draw the United States into a costly military or economic conflict.
As this event unfolded, the crew of the submarine made an unusual request—that the threat be made public at an appropriate time in the immediate future. The president personally agreed to this request, first to the crew and then to me. As the months passed, the administration was eventually replaced through our normal election process, and still not a single detail was released to the public.
Much to my dismay, I believe the current administration has attempted to cover up this threat, to the detriment of our national security. This accusation can be backed up with facts, but is an issue separate from the threat itself. For the time being, I prefer to concentrate solely on the mission and the threat of communist China as a rising superpower.
I have spent many sleepless nights pondering my oath and the consequences of breaking it, and ultimately reached the conclusion that the American people deserve the truth. Withholding such critical information from the people would be irresponsible, if not immoral. We must, as individuals and as a nation, be prepared to defend ourselves and our allies. Simply said, we must know our enemies and their potential to wage war.
The following account of the mission, which carried the codename RUBER IGNIS FORMICAE CONVOLANT, into the Bo Hai Bay of China is based on classified intelligence which I had access to, and firsthand accounts related to me from crewmen aboard the USS Charlotte.
May God bless the United States of America.
