Ben and Coop finished their breakfast and left their usual generous tip for Myrtle before heading to their cars. Coop stood to reveal his snarky t-shirt of the day, which read “I’d rather be a SMARTASS than a DUMBASS.”
Ben laughed and said, “New shirt? I don’t remember that one.”
“Thanks for noticing. It came in the mail yesterday. I think it’s a perfect addition to my collection.”
As they stepped outside, the heft of the June morning air was like a soggy hot blanket. Coop saw Gus, his golden retriever, poke his head out of the window of his Jeep he had parked under the canopy of a beech tree. Ben was parked next to Coop and gave Gus a thorough petting before getting in his car. “See you next Friday. Have fun at your party tomorrow,” said Ben, with a hint of a snicker.
“Don’t remind me. Think of me while you’re drinking beer and watching the game. I envy you, you know.” Coop waved as he hopped in his vintage metallic green Jeep.
