John’s hand rested on the door.
“Close the door! Keep the door shut! Don’t let her leave!” Shouts and yells rang through the hall. A frantic lady was running toward him, her hands clasping the handles of a nurse cart.
“Out of my way!” she shouted. The rapid footsteps resonated through the corridor and the cart rattled to keep ahead.
A man, still a fair distance behind the woman, seemed focused on detaining her. He heaved out short breaths of air and shouted, “Keep the door shut! Don’t let her leave!”
A sturdy woman followed close behind him. Her high heels pounded against the russet floor. “Watch the door. Keep it closed!”
John’s hand still rested on the door.
“Close the door,” the man yelled.
John obeyed and stationed his body between the main entrance and the fast approaching cart.
The crazy woman showed no signs of trepidation. “Out of my way,” she sneered.
“Stay where you are,” the man called to John, his steps slowing down to a shuffle.
The frenzied woman continued to race ahead and the cart headed straight toward John. His arms stretched forward.
Whack!
Pain shot through his knees. To grab his leg and search for a seat of safety—the idea brought relief. However, he needed to appear strong. He turned his focus away from the pain and stared into the deranged woman’s eyes.
Through her gritted yellow teeth, she released a dark and heavy exhale, a strong stench of nicotine and onions. John struggled not to gag at the horrific smell.
She leaned forward and glared at him. “Move!”
“No.” His voice sounded strong, yet his stomach felt queasy.
