July - Edith's Stay at the Convent

Halfway through the year, Edith accompanies her abusive husband into Yorkshire, chaperoned by The Fool. Here she has a brief reprieve, although events turn into chaos on Henry de Bois' return. While she is in the convent, she discovers hints of the past which united the embittered Normans. She also meets Sister Helena, a blind mystic who gives an unwelcome warning of the future. Encouraged by the innocence of Edith and angered by her husband's treatment of her, The Fool openly mocks Henry de Bois. But this could result in the loss of the only friend Edith has found within the Norman garrison.
