House of Refuge

My books are repositories for all of my favorite things in life--and blessedly, there are many. The Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge is one of these. Until I visited I had no idea such places existed. I had never stopped to consider the fate of a person who was shipwrecked on the nearly uninhabited coast of Florida in the mid-1800s. I hope I've brought this place alive in my readers' minds.

Where I got this idea...

One of my friends, Amy G., and her kids were accosted last Halloween. When I heard her story, I couldn't help but feel a chill. To be threatened like that when you were with your children? Ugh. In real life, Amy and her kids escaped harm, and the young thugs were caught. In my story...well, you'll have to read it.

Inappropriate thoughts in times of stress

We tend to think the oddest, silliest thoughts. That's what Cara and Sam do here. I suspect it's our mind's way of distancing us from the crisis at hand.
