The Typing JackaPoo

Mack the typing Jackapoo plays a key role in this story and he was inspired by a real life dog and a cartoon dog. I consider myself to have two dogs--one real dog (Buddy an 220 pound English Mastiff who thinks he's a 12 pound puppy) and one Facebook dog--Charlie, the cutest Jack-a-Poo in the world who belongs to my author-friend. Mack was inspired by my favorite cartoon character Snoopy (Peanuts--I wear a Snoopy watch daily) and my FB dog. I told my friend I was using Charlie as inspiration for the pet in my story and asked her for the breed; I knew he was a mix but didn't know what. She gave me the breed--part Jack Terrier, Part Toy Poodle--and a thumbs up. Anyway, Mack is the character in the story that makes things go "boom." But he's so cute, how can Mel get mad at him?

The Eligible Receiver

In Her Perfect Catch, a story about a struggling female sports writer who uses a male pen name to be taken seriously -- Jet is one of the heroes. He's a star NFL wide receiver who is bearing the brunt of one of my main characters scathing articles and she has given him the nickname "Thirteen" for reasons related to his catching performance during the NFC Divisional Championship. If you want to know what that means, of course you have to read the book. But this story does delve a little into my perceptions about how athletes handle media pressure, especially when they've had some "issues." (As an aside, the story's team is the fictional Washington "Warriors" but I take full credit for predicting their success if they make it past the wild card round this week.)

Girls Love the NFL, Too!

My novella, Her Perfect Catch, is part of a Valentine's Anthology I joined with 13 other authors. It was inspired by my experiences as Washington Redskins fan and football lover. Most of the time when guys are holding conversations they kind of look through me as if I don't know anything when I probably know more about sports than they do. Kind of ticks me off. So this story is a tribute to all those girls. My character Melanie is a female sports writer who takes on a male pen name so she'll be taken seriously. When she gets tickets to the Super Bowl and has a chance encounter with her favorite NFL star, her work has consequences she never anticipated.

Pride

One of my favorite books EVER is Pride and Prejudice. Took me years to read it because I didn't think I could relate. But I found that humor and the human experience translate across time and ethnicity. I wanted other black teen girls to love it as much as I did. So I decided to do a retelling with Liz as a very smart tomboyish black teenager suffering from esteem issues--who in a series of twists is thrust into the lives of two boys. And the mother is obsessed with saving her girls' virginity rather then marrying them off. An interesting twist for a new day.

Holiday Break-Up...Ugh!

The only thing more depressing than being single during the holiday is breaking up right before or during a holiday--especially Christmas or New Year's Day. That's where we meet the main character of The Bum Magnet, Charisse, smack dab in the middle of a hilarious depression. What I love about this character is that she's going through what only can be described as relationship hell but she views everything through a hilarious prism. Her self talk is as funny as the situations she finds herself in. It makes Charisse one of the most relatable characters you'll ever read.

Assaulted Accidentally on Purpose

I love writing romantic comedies because the genre allows you to take painful situations and turn them on their heads to make them funny. In this story, the main character, Miki, learns the hard way that sometimes when you're on an express trip down to rock bottom, sometimes you're doing your own digging. Miki's hands are dirty and she's in a rush to get to rock bottom which begins with her FIRST trip to court. When Karma offers her a chance at revenge on an ex-boyfriend and she exploits that opportunity to the fullest, it's just the first step of many in the wrong direction.
