Bouvier des ...what?

Choosing a dog breed has been part of the joy of writing the K-9 Rescue series. I'd already featured a Yellow Lab for my FBI guy in "Necessary Force", and a Belgian Malinois in "Irresistible Force" to partner with a (very hunky) police officer. For my next book I'd decided on the story line to feature two K-9s: a Chocolate Lab for my DEA hero, and I needed to come up with a big, strong, smart breed to compliment my heroine, who is also on the job (police officer). After some research I discovered that the Bouvier des Flanders was in use around the country. Prized for their loyalty, agility, strength and temperment, I knew I had found my dog! Hugo, in the story, is modeled after a big black "Bouvie"named Marko I had the pleasure of meeting just before I started writing. I hope you enjoy meeting my human and canine protagonists in "Force of Attraction".

Irresistible Force

Romance

When adrenaline runs high, so does the force of desire… For Shay Appleton, it’s love at first sight when a gorgeous stray dog is brought into the animal shelter where she works. She just knows he’ll make a terrific watch dog—and with an abusive ex who won’t let go, she needs all the protection she can get. But Shay never suspected that her new pet is actually a trained police K-9 named Bogart—until Bogart’s even more gorgeous, human partner shows up on her doorstep. IRRESISTIBLE FORCE by D.D. Ayres Officer James Cannon is one tall, strong alpha male who’s convinced that Shay stole his dog. But once he gets closer to the suspect, he realizes that this stubborn, independent woman not only needs a guard dog, she needs James as well. It seems that someone from her past is stalking her, and threatening her life. When danger meets desire, will James risk his career and his best friend…to protect the woman who’s stolen his heart?

Peripheral Vision

Ever notice how movement catches your eye when it's in the periphery I'll be plowing ahead following my )general) outline when suddenly, out to the side there's "movement"! Wait a minute, that wasn't in the plan... but hmmmm... wonder where it will lead? Well, writings kinda like that sometimes.. Doesn't always lead to something important, just like a movement in your peripheral vision is often nothing. But sometimes, it can mean a lot! You have to check it out anyway, and that's part of the creative process. Keep reading!

K9 Partners

What qualities set a K9 animal partner apart from ordinary dogs? Law enforcement K-9s aren't pets. They are high-maintenance, challenging animals who require constant training/reinforcement. Handlers talk about their dogs with affection, respecting their quirks and individual personalities. One police handler, my go-to expert on all things K-9, lost his partner when the dog took a bullet while apprehending a suspect. The officer didn't tell me that he had been shot, as well. I learned that on my own. The officer didn't go to the emergency room until after his dog died at the vet. I thought a character with that level of commitment would make a good love interest.

Necessary Force

Romance

It was supposed to be a sexy calendar shoot to raise money for K-9 service dogs. Photographer Georgie Flynn never expected to break all her personal rules and jump into bed with one of the hunky men posing. And after their steamy night together, she certainly never expected to see him again…despite their powerful connection. When she's targeted by a stalker and possible bomber, Georgie finds that her gorgeous one-night stand is the only one who can help. Brad Lawson, an FBI operative, and his K-9 bomb sniffing partner are assigned to protect the pretty photographer--and this time, he’s determined to keep things professional. He just didn't count on their explosive connection rekindling. But with a deadly threat on the horizon, will he be able to keep his body’s demands in check and complete his mission?

A Woman's Best Friend

The age old adage is that “Dog is man's best friend.” Historically, the canine hunted with his owner, searched for game, protected the flock , and alerted the village of an possible attack. Those needs are no longer so high on the modern man’s urban-suburban “To Do” list. Yet, I know quite a few women who would argue that the modern dog might just have become woman’s best friend. Many consider their relationship with their dogs to be one of the very best things that has ever happened in their lives. Let's look at a list of doggy characteristics from the female perspective. Dogs are loyal, generally obedient -- as long as you didn't leave the trash uncovered or a juicy steak thawing on the sink. As for the shoe that was chewed up? Maybe you left him alone too long. Dogs have feelings, too. A dog is ALWAYS happy to see you. Make that, like you just came back from a six-month trek across the Sahara, happy. Even if it was just a quick trip to the grocery store. I think it's this that wins a woman's heart. Nothing like a moist doggy gaze of rapt attention to make a girl feel special.

Life's Like That

Sometimes my characters seem more real than anything else... I get emotionally invoved with them and really miss them when I'm through the final edit and moving on to my next project. Come to think of it, I get that way with characters I read about too, if they engage me. How about you?

Make love- and make photos!

Lexi: Necessary Force has a great beginning! The heroine, Georgiana, is climbing out of bed. Out from under the sexy man she met at her photo shoot. Ayres describes his naked glory very artistically, exactly how Georgie sees him. What a great scene, and the rest of the novella keeps that same quality! I dare either of you to tell me you didn’t love that opening. Crystal: That was definitely one of the most sensual openings I have ever read. I loved Georgie's internal dialogue at the time, describing what she saw while taking pictures of the very nekkid and oh-so-sexy man in her bed. How the bedding was "drawn up at a right angle to offer tantalizing shadowy glimpses of his impressive equipment." Oh-la-la! Crystal L: I have to admit that my brain stuck on "impressive equipment" and stayed there for a while, lol. But when I came out of my sexy coma I went back, re-read the section again and appreciated the visual treat that Ayers gave us even more. I loved that opening. -Exerpted from "Reading between the Wines" http://tinyurl.com/m5c7m77
