Byron knows he's dying, and he wished for a better life than this, but he gave his life in exchange for killing some of the invaders. Throughout the book there are glimpses of his inner sense of duty. He's a stark character who had many things taken from him and yet he still marches on.

Power
Kyle wants to use his power, forgetting the consequences, though the man he loves, Reggie, is always schooling him for moderation or to not sure it at all. They are coming from two different perspectives. Reggie has Corruption, a physical mutation every time he uses the power, while Kyle as Taint, a physical reaction -- the shakes -- to using his power. One is permanent, the other temporary.
