The Guardian

Science Fiction & Fantasy

The kingdom of Drachwald; known among the five realms of Warim as a land of adventure, danger, and above all else… Legends. The Hall of Legends is where tales of Drachwald’s most fabled warriors are preserved. When invaders seek to desecrate the Hall, one of the few Drachwald warriors who never aspired to be a Legend must now become something more. The nameless old soldier content to be forgotten must fight a battle that could see him remembered always as - The Guardian. The Guardian is classic sword and shield high fantasy, but without the high word count. A standalone adventure set in a larger world. If you’re looking for a fun, strategic, fast-paced, last-stand, battle oriented fantasy story without committing to a 12-book series of bloated tomes, this is your book.

Meet the Guardian

I was inspired to write The Guardian in order to make a main character out of a support character. I wanted to write a hero that was the grunt always protecting the back of other heroes. The Guardian has fought with many of the heroes that fill the Hall of Legends, but never became one himself. He never had a heroic story, a famous weapon, or a unique fighting style. In a land where every child dreams of becoming a legend, he only wanted to protect his brothers and fought in the most brutally efficient manner possible to achieve this goal. For this reason, I never name him. Through the story he is only referred to as "The old soldier," and at the end of the story "The Guardian." I was also inspired by the quote "Beware a man that has grown old in a profession where men generally die young." The mountain is based on Mt. Dundas in Thule, Greenland. I stole the tradition of carrying a stone to leave in a pile on top from a real tradition. When you climb Mt. Dundas you write your name and the date on a rock and add it to a pile with the rocks from everyone else who made the climb. There is a rock up there with my name.
