Lesson One: Revolution!

Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

A school is a place for learning, but for disgruntled history teacher Dan Starney it's also a place to recruit his best students. His sights are set on restoring liberty where he sees it has been stripped away by an ever-growing government, and Dan looks for the best and brightest to join him in his attempt to correct the problem. His planning didn't include being drawn into a school controversy, though, and when the school thrusts him into the spotlight, his careful plotting starts to go astray. Karena Walsh, another teacher at the same school realizes that Dan may be attempting something unethical, and she takes it upon herself to secretly investigate. Her feelings toward Dan begin to change, catching her off guard. As the school controversy heats up, Dan and Karena are both forced into decisions that neither one wants to make.

Not The Teacher's Pet

Although some students in Dan Starney's classes receive special treatment that goes well beyond the classroom, other students do not make it into his inner circle. Dan has even more trouble in store for him from Jessica, a student who is definitely not in that inner circle. In this scene, Jessica challenges Dan about his apparent violation of a directive from the school regarding a controversy about another teacher.

Dan, Mark, and Social Issues

This scene near the end of the first "act" of the novel introduces Dan's friend Mark, as the two discuss some of the underlying issues that are troubling Dan. Mark has no idea just how deep those troubles run, however.

The Worries of Karena

This is the beginning of "Act II" in the novel, where the point-of-view shifts to math teacher Karena Walsh. At this point, Karena has seen enough of Dan to begin worrying about what he is doing with his favored students. She turns to her friend Donna for guidance.

Trouble on the Horizon

This excerpt is from the first chapter and shows the point at which Dan Starney learns that the school wants him for something. That something is going to mean an awful lot of trouble for him!

"Power Off" explores an alien invasion scenario kicked off as retaliation for an attack we didn't know we were making. "Tea Leaf Technology" introduces a sneaky and technologically-empowered galactic cult. Finally, "Tramp Avatar" is a short tale of a young man confronting the complexity of reality on what started as an ordinary day.

Beginning of Tramp Avatar

This is the beginning of the shortest story in the book, Tramp Avatar. In addition to being the shortest story, it is also the one that stands out as not fitting with the typical science fiction themes of the other stories. Is it a fiction of science, or fantasy, or...?

Journey to Yandol

This is the beginning of the longest story in the book. It introduces the main character and her ship, as well as her troublesome passenger. It also begins to explain the trouble she's had with the law.
