When a dying mother informs her son that the man he believed to be his father was not, he sets out to retrace the lost events of 1979 in a blue-blood corner of Hawaii. His journey into the past reveals as much about his mother, the long held secrets of her youth and the romantic vision she held for her future, as it does about the war hero she had hoped would share her life forever. His search also reveals Honolulu’s more sinister facet; a transient, sexually abusive and often violent group of individuals whose incestuous passions lurk in the city’s seedier side; a dark force that will ultimately cross his mother’s path and forever destroy the hopes she had once possessed. On the surface “Aloha State” is a search for a lost loved one, but at its soul it is an exposé of abuse and its lasting legacy.
