A book usually has many characters in it and it may be difficult to give some of them life, something beyond two dimensions when you simply want to get on with the story. To add true depth to your characters, I've found it helps to 'interview' them as though you were doing an article about them. What was their life like as a child, what pitfalls did they experience, what dreams were dashed or met? How did they overcome loss? How did that loss change them? These are questions that will add depth to your characters and make them believable.
