Book #1 of the middle grade to preteen epic fantasy fiction series, Magdalena Gottschalk: The Crooked Trail, begins with adventure as Magdalena, Gabriel, and Hubert decide to spend a beautiful fall day exploring the wilderness behind Hubert’s barn. Looking for some excitement and fun, they have no idea what lies ahead. It doesn’t take long for the children to realize that something is amiss. Oddly enough, Magdalena’s sixth sense seems to come alive as they begin their expedition on the dirt trail leading from Hubert’s barn to the woods back behind his house. She quickly dismisses the butterflies in her stomach while chiding herself for being so silly. It doesn’t take long to realize that she should have listened to her instincts. The first two chapters of the book set the background for the rest of the series. In this chapter, number three, Magdalena comes to the realization she is somehow different from the others as she begins to hear ghastly sounds that no one else can detect. Instead of turning around, she again shrugs it off, leading to a life-changing observation.
