The beginnings of Tamarisk

At the center of BLUE is Tamarisk, a bedtime-story world that Chris and his daughter Becky created when she was young and very sick. Tamarisk becomes a shared fascination for them, something that deepens their bond...until Chris and Becky's mom divorce and Becky announces that she will no longer create new Tamarisk stories with Chris. This scene is essentially the "origin story" of Tamarisk. At this point in the novel, Chris is devastated about how his relationship with Becky has evolved. This will change in ways he can't possibly imagine

Meet Chris

Chris was one of the most challenging characters I've ever written. He started out as me – if things had gone fundamentally differently at a critical point in my life. From there, he went off entirely on his own. In order to make him real, I needed him to make decisions I never would have made, and by the time I actually started writing the novel Chris had evolved into someone I sympathized with but also wanted to shake and say, "Get it together." In this scene, which opens BLUE, Chris is firmly stuck in neutral.

Meet Miea

Miea is one of three viewpoint characters in BLUE. She's the young queen of a land that has seen far too much hardship in recent years – including the hardship that led her to the throne decades before she expected. We meet Miea for the first time in this scene, just as she is discovering a new challenge to her kingdom. Miea's story intertwines with the story of two people from a very different world in ways that will have surprising ramifications for all of them.
