Author's Note

Though Soulceress is set in the present day, I couldn’t help but try to stay as true to history as possible when writing Warren and Esha’s past. This meant timing everyone’s birth to the Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1661-1662. It was one of several large witch trials during the 17th century, and this was likely the period during which the most people were tried for witchcraft in Scotland. These are the witch hunts that inspired the Burnings. Warren was born in 1630, which would have made him 31 at the time he rescued an infant Esha in 1661.

Author's Note

In Rogue Soul, I had a great time returning to the history that inspired my first book, Braving Fate. Historically, Camulos and Andrasta were both Celtic gods worshipped by the Celts of Britain. The Celtic kingdom of the Iceni favored Andrasta, goddess of victory, while the people of the Trinovante kingdom favored Camuos, god of war. They are just two out of hundreds of Celtic gods worshipped by thousands of people from dozens of kingdoms and tribes. The Celts weren’t one people in one place at one time. Rather, they were a culture that originated in central Europe and spread out to encompass most of Europe and the British Isles during the first millennium B.C. They spoke many languages and worshiped many gods, but were linked by their material culture and advanced use of metalwork.

Now he’s tasked with protecting mortals whose lives affect the fate of humanity. His latest assignment is Boudica herself, reincarnated as a woman with no idea of her past or her fated future. Though in the irresistible form of Diana Laughton, it's possible Cadan has once again met his match… To succumb to seduction could prove fatal Thrown together in a shadowy world that exists alongside our own, Diana and Cadan must fight not only the demonic forces that want Diana dead, but a past and a passion that have lasted centuries. Their desire could be deadly. But as evil from the underworld unites against them, their only hope could be each other.

Book Bubbles from Braving Fate

Boudica/Diana

Boudica was one of Britain’s greatest warriors. Most of what I said about her is true according to archaeology and history (take this with a grain of salt—scholars do their best to learn the truth about the past, but some of it is always shrouded in fog). One place that I fudged a bit was the fate of her daughters. According to the Roman historian Tacitus, when the Romans attacked Boudica’s kingdom following the death of her husband Prasutagus, they whipped Boudica and raped her daughters. This does not happen to her daughters in Braving Fate. Instead, I had the Romans killed them outright. I made this decision because it suited the story better. Also, I invented the names of her daughters, as they were not recorded by history. Aela and Calea, however, are Celtic names.

Cadan Trinovante

Cadan has just awoken after dreaming of the death of his lost love, Boudica, a Celtic warrior queen who killed herself two thousand years ago after a terrible loss in battle. She died in his arms believing that Cadan had betrayed her to the enemy, something that he doesn't understand.

For more than one hundred years, Ian has been locked in a nightmarish prison. An accomplished thief, he was thrown into hell for failing to maintain the secrecy of his magical race. Author's Note

The museum in this book, called the Scottish Museum of Antiquities, was based off of the real National Museum of Scotland, located in Edinburgh. The National Museum is an amazing place, full of artifacts and history from dozens of periods. The cat in this story, Fluffy Black, is based off of a very sweet stray cat who came into our lives for too short a period. Illness took her too soon, so I tried to immortalize her here, in the pages of Stolen Fate. I hope you like her, and will consider adopting a stray cat or dog if they ever come into your life (perhaps you already have :-).

Author's Note

I have always loved mythology, particularly Norse mythology. It wasn’t hard to decide that I wanted to write a version of Loki’s story—but it was difficult to decide exactly how to do it. He’s an epic character in mythology—and now popular culture with the Avenger’s franchise—and I wanted to do that figure justice. First, I should say that the Loki in this book has nothing to do with the Avenger’s character. Tom Hiddleston plays him to perfection, but that’s not the Loki who lives within the world of the Mythean Arcana. It’s one of the reasons that Loki decided to go by Logan—he’s a different guy now.

Sigyn

When it came time for Loki to find his heroine, it was obvious to me that it had to be Sigyn. In Norse Mythology, Sigyn is Loki’s wife. In Old Norse, her name means something like “victorious girlfriend”. Sigyn and Loki are married at the time that he is chained beneath the snake, which did happen according to the Prose Edda, a collection of Old Norse poems recorded by Snorri Sturluson in 13th century Iceland. In the Edda, Loki never escapes the bonds—at least, not until Ragnarok. Sigyn stays by his side and captures the snake’s venom in a bowl. Every time that she needs to empty the bowl, the venom drips onto Loki. His spasms of pain are so great that he causes earthquakes that mortals can feel. Well, I didn’t want my heroine to be defined by her relationship to the hero. She’s a hero in her own right, with her own story and accomplishments. I changed her from a goddess to a Vala and gave her a whole new backstory—one that didn’t involve marrying Loki (at least, not in Asgard).

Author's Note

As with most of my books, I incorporated history where I could. Normally, I use it to enrich the backstory. For example, the Burnings that I mention (a time in Mythean history when soulceresses were hunted and killed because other Mytheans feared them) was inspired by the Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1661-1662. This is when Aurora was persecuted and her mother killed. It was one of several periods of witch trials during the 17th century, and this was likely the one in which the most people were tried for witchcraft in Scotland.

Witch's Fate

Romance

Powerful witch Sofia Viera has loved warlock-werewolf half-blood Malcolm Brent for centuries, ever since they trained to become warlocks together. When Malcolm chose power instead of love and cast her aside, she vowed to forget him. For four hundred years, it worked. Until he forces her to return to him… Despite the fact that fate is prophesied to tear them apart, Malcolm refuses to be separated from Sofia any longer. After centuries alone, he wants everything from her. Her mind, body, soul. Her love. When he steals a dagger that she desperately needs in an attempt to draw her to him, he unwittingly unleashes a force of evil that will destroy everything she loves. He promises to help her save her village… For a price.

Book Bubbles from Witch's Fate

Author's Note

When I thought about Sofia having to save Malcolm from an afterworld, the first myth that came to mind was that of Orpheus and Eurydice. I always thought it was one of the saddest myths, but reading Plato’s take on it had me rethinking. It’s still a sad story, but Plato’s version (written about in his text Symposium) has Orpheus painted as a coward who was unwilling to die to be with Eurydice. Because he was unwilling to die for his love, it was not true love. So the gods punished him by presenting him with an apparition of Eurydice (she was never really behind him holding his hand). This version of the myth is somehow less heartbreaking (to me, at least) and I thought it suited Witch’s Fate best.

Mirror Mage

Science Fiction & Fantasy

Cass Clereaux likes her job. It’s simple—steal the magic, don’t get killed. FireSouls like her are perfect for magic treasure hunting. Their dragon soul helps them find treasure, their wicked powers help them steal it. But there’s a big freaking downside—FireSouls are hunted. If either of the magical governments figures out what she is, she can kiss her life goodbye. When the Alpha Council comes to her with a special job, it’s a no-brainer to turn it down, no matter how much money they’re offering. Shifters who can sniff out her weird magic are the last supernaturals she needs to be around. Worse? They have a history of hunting FireSouls. But when Cass learns that a little girl’s life is at stake and Cass is her last hope, she doesn’t have a choice. With her sisters and the powerful Shifter Aidan Merrick at her back, she’s got a chance at saving the girl and keeping her deadly secret—until she learns there’s far more to this kidnapping than meets the eye.

Author's Note

As with my other books, I included historical sites in Mirror Mage. The most important historical site in Mirror Mage is the ruined city that is the setting for the final battle. This took place at the ruins of Ephesus, the ancient Greek and Roman city in Turkey. The statue of Hercules, the amphitheater, the library, the brothel, and even the sign pointing to the brothel are all real. You can even visit!

Ancient Magic

Science Fiction & Fantasy

Cass Clereaux is good at two things: finding treasure and killing demons. Lying low is a close third—but not because she wants to be good at hiding. Cass is a FireSoul, one of the unlucky few to inherit a piece of the dragon’s soul. Being born with the dragon’s covetousness should be a sweet gig—she has the power to find and steal any type of treasure, including the powers of other supernaturals. But it doesn’t come without a price - stealing powers requires that she kill, and others would destroy her if they discover what she is. In a world full of magic, hiding her powers is the only way to survive. Finding magical artifacts and killing demons are the only ways to pay the bills. It’s a dangerous job when you can barely use your magic, but that’s one of the things she likes about it. When Aidan Merrick, the most powerful shifter in the city, hires her to find an ancient scroll, she doesn’t want to take the job. His immense amount of power reminds her of too much of murky memories from a past she can’t remember. But she doesn’t have a choice. The scroll will reveal what she is. And if anyone finds out, she’s dead.

Book Bubbles from Ancient Magic

Cass Cleraux

So why did I make Cass Cleraux a treasure hunter? I’d have loved to call her an archaeologist, but nothing about Cass’s work is like archaeology. Archaeology is a very laborious, painstaking process—and it certainly doesn’t involve selling artifacts. That wouldn’t work for the fast paced, adventurous series that I had planned for Dragon’s Gift. Not to mention the fact that dragons are famous for coveting treasure. Considering where Cass got her skills from, it just made sense to call her a treasure hunter. Even though I write urban fantasy, I strive for accuracy. Cass doesn’t engage in archaeological practices—therefore, I cannot call her an archaeologist. I also have a duty as an archaeologist to properly represent my field and our goals—namely, to protect and share history. Treasure hunting doesn’t do this. One of the biggest battles that archaeology faces today is protecting cultural heritage from thieves.
