Gingerbread Memories

My family spent summers in Maine visiting my great-grandparents. One of my great-grandmother's friends was Kaye Housel, who was a silhouette artist. She created art using light, a pair of scissors, and black paper. In a few minutes she would cut out a side view of her subject, and then glue it to a 5"x7" white paper. My sisters and I each had out silhouette portraits done. She also baked amazing gingerbread. I still remember the fragrant smell of just-baked gingerbread as we opened to door to visit her. I've loved gingerbread ever since, and created my own recipe over time. In a pinch the box mix from Dromedary would do, but during the holidays I love baking gingerbread cupcakes to send to family and friends.
