The Legacy of Thaer

Science Fiction & Fantasy

Julian Thatcher’s life is about to get seriously elfed up.

On his thirteenth birthday, Julian’s godfather shows up to his party and surprises him with unusual gifts in the form of a bow and a quiver. He calls him a “special young man” and tells him he has a “destiny beyond your wildest dreams.” According to his godfather, Julian is part elf, a special hybrid that is the only of his kind; and his kind comes from another world called Thaer. What’s more, his destiny is to unify the race of elves––driven apart by political scandal into different factions, all in hiding, trusting none but their own––and restore their honor in time to stop the resurgence of an old evil threatening to plunge Thaer into a dystopia.

Julian doesn’t believe any of this until an extraordinary event forces him to turn to his godfather for answers; answers that come in the form of more unusual gifts––a book and a necklace. The book tells him of his astonishing origins and the necklace transports him to Thaer; where he embarks on a difficult and dangerous mission. He meets a mysterious ally; joins a clan of elves; faces a goal too high, too harsh; and battles an immovable force to fulfill his destiny as the Elvan, the one who will restore the Legacy of Thaer. Along the way Julian discovers that when you leave behind the life you’ve always known, to save a world you never knew existed, things do not go as planned.

This is the Quest of the Elvan. This is the beginning.

Julian's Journey to Thaer

The start of chapter thirteen. Julian has just had a vision while in the woods practicing archery with his godfather, Alistaire. This powerful event, as well as a confession Julian makes to Alistaire, cements a truth that he was having trouble coming to terms with — Thaer was real, his destiny was real, and now he had to do something about it. That’s when Alistaire essentially gives him a push. A literal push. Without telling Julian his intentions Alistaire leads him to the edge of a cliff, all while talking to him about the urgency of his now accepted mission, then at the last minute embracing him and asking for forgiveness. He then launches both himself and Julian off the cliff, into the swirling waters of the lake below, to enact the magic that will take Julian into the world of Thaer. It is an extremely reckless act to anyone but Alistaire, yet it is necessary. For his part Julian experiences a range of emotions — panic, fear, confusion — along with the physical peril that he's in. It's an awful experience and we're taken into his thoughts until he blacks out and passes over. His arrival doesn't go unnoticed. When he wakes up, he encounters strange beings that are most definitely not of Earth. Julian realizes, with undeniable clarity, that he's in a very new reality. Earth is in his rearview mirror, he's in Thaer now.
