THE ALCATRAZ OPTION

Literature & Fiction

The Alcatraz Option, is a crime/sci-fi saga beginning with the escape of “El Chapo” in 2015 from prison and ending three decades later. In the final decade, (2030) all competing cartels in Mexico have merged into a single cartel, which is run like a Fortune 100 company. It becomes the most successful criminal enterprise in history and functions as a second government in Mexico. The cartel creates the most addictive and destructive illegal drug in history. The drug causes an enormous spike in crime and unprecedented prison overcrowding. Conditions within American prisons are so horrendous that inmate suicides are common. Alcatraz is converted back to a prison to accommodate the unrelenting flow of new prisoners. A solution to overcrowding is finally found. Inmates are given a choice of serving out their terms or gaining immediate freedom if they are willing to undergo an Orwellian chemical procedure which ages them by the length of their sentence; hence the title, “The Alcatraz Option.” A wrongfully imprisoned inmate learns that his wife has been abducted by the head of the cartel and exercises the option to gain his freedom and rescue her. In his quest, however, he will not be as he once was, physically fit and tough (he was a former war hero), but as a man with all of the physical and psychological frailties of an octogenarian.
