The story opens on a trial for murder. Two brothers had been held in a basement laboratory, and one is charged with killing his father. The trial has stirred up anger and concern in the country for reasons not immediately obvious. The story describes how a bid to free one of the boys led, eventually, to the arrest and murder charge. With guilt apparently obvious, even a last-minute alibi fails to secure the boy's release, and his fate appears sealed.
Book Bubbles from The boy behind the glass screen
This small section aims to do two things. It links 'now' which is clearly a trial of some sort, with 'then', some of the history of the main characters. There is also a clue in the very first words as to how the story will end. There is a verry deliberate choice of words and phrases, for instance 'unfragmented' has a specific meaning later on. In the opening I wanted to make it clear thay Aiden was waiting for Oliver and his father - this alone would set him apart from the two of them. I also tried to make the strange set up 'normal. As with the start of any novel I was asking readers to come on board and to give them a genuine sense of where the journey might go.
