Hope

Children's Books

Named a changeling by some, Sarragh is certainly an unusual girl. That's why the intrepid Candela has chosen her for a task that no ordinary mortal might survive. Sarragh's quick, unthinking eagerness to accept will lead her to hidden places that reveal old secrets and truths that challenge her beyond her eeriest and most remarkable dreams.-------------------------------- 'Daughter of the Sootstress,' Candela breathed, 'we have a task for you.' Candela paused, her eyes gentle pinpricks. She spoke the next words unflinchingly. 'It will test you.' The small hairs stood on my neck. My easy manner slipped from me as I placed my right hand upon my chest, below my throat, the way I had been taught, when... I could not remember...it was a memory of shadows. I looked Candela, the unicorn—the mother of all unicorns—straight in the eyes. 'Test me, then,' I whispered. When a cryptic messenger reveals veiled words of prophecy, things change in Wish, forever. The high tower keeper, Hope, has gone missing. In her bid to complete the Circle of Light, everything depends upon Hope being found. The bleak invader leaks further into the land of Wish as the unicorns gather to battle the darkness. And so the plight of Sarragh deepens as she seeks the inscrutable Hope in places that even unicorns cannot go.

Wish Again

Children's Books

Going back to Wish was the last thing on Rielle’s mind. Wish seemed only good for trouble. But when Hope’s butterfly is stolen by the old cursed winds and the Bridge of the Long Forgotten is clean torn away, she has no choice. Then, she meets the First One—he with his odd moods and magic, singing wand—and everything changes. But it will be the unicorns—those graceful warriors who stand strong in the face of adversity and surge forward when it counts—who appear in Wish to sweep them all away! -------------------The Ritual of Return tested, Candela stood tall. Then, she strode to the doorway of the Tower and briefly paused. The gathering held its breath. Perhaps Candela would change her mind. Just once, she looked back. “Destiny we are meeting,” she breathed.

Star trails

The wonders seen in Wish match the wonders of our own beautiful world. Star trails... only a camera can really see them... but in Wish, everyone can...

When we need a friend...

Have you ever needed a friend? So much trouble can be fixed if we have at least one true friend who asks no questions yet is simply there to fly with us to wherever we need to be...

Wise and knowing...

Who can resist wisdom, beauty and compassion? Wish

Children's Books

Headstrong and feisty, Rielle is lost, and she knows it. When she and the faithful Pud find themselves hopelessly alone in a wild landscape, they drift into an untamed forest. Rielle has been in plenty of pickles, but the hairs rising on the back of her neck tell her that this time, things are going to be very different!--------------------------- Where Rielle comes from, nobody even talks about unicorns, let alone fabled forests, mighty First Ones, shapeshifters or lands that don’t exist on maps. But when Rielle’s parents suddenly disappear, Rielle decides to go and look for them. Nothing has prepared her for the things to come. From wandering alone in unknown places to finding the treasured and faithful Pud, she stumbles unknowingly into a land called Wish, where, it seems, anything is possible. And there she unwittingly unlocks a long-lost tale of unicorns that unravels from the mists of time.

Was it real or was it not

The dream of night dreams and the dream of life. We each create some part of our dream... which one is yours?

Just when we think we are safe...

Still a girl, Rielle has been homeless and alone with just her dog for a long time. She is well past discovering that adventures are always much more than you bargained for! But even for her, the lure and tug of the land of Wish - made from the mind of humans - is too much. How can she possibly resist the hand of destiny or the tug of free will?

The World of Wish

'Be careful what you wish for' is a saying that's been around for a very long time. Wishes can be wonderful things but sometimes we should be grateful for the wishes that never came true. In the world of Wish, anything is possible ... it's up to you.

The lonely, the lost, the storm

Caught in a storm and all alone except for her dog, Rielle has no one she can count on. By her wits, and the faithful Pud's mysterious nose for the remarkable, they soon discover that once the storm is over events have tugged them beyond the wall of their imagination. Like all adventures, it's difficult to know if things have just become better or worse.

Impatience...

I don't know about you, but ‘working’ with my impatience has been something of an interesting learning curve. I didn't really have any, (impatience,) until I reached my thirties, then it suddenly flourished, plaguing me for a time. I still suffer slightly from the affliction, but these days I’ve learned to think it out before letting it spread like a wildfire! Rielle... I absolutely love writing her... and here in Wish, book one of The Unicorns of Wish, right at the beginning of the series, impatience is her rule of thumb... but I guess you can expect that from a child who has no home to go to, no loved ones, other than her wonderful and enchanting big dog, and who lives purely from her wits, cunning, cleverness and being savvy and wily. That's what unicorns are for… they have a way of showing us the things we cannot see….

Oh, those mysterious storytelling strangers!

I will admit to being a bit selfish when I wrote The Unicorns of Wish. How was I selfish? Well, perhaps like many writers, 'The Unicorns of Wish' is the story that I wanted to read when I was a child. I never could resist a hint of mystery brought on by a fascinating stranger; someone who doesn't fit into the 'normal' fabric of everyone else's life. At last, I was able to create the books I always wanted to read, with all the puzzling strangers I could handle! :) A mysterious stranger, travelling with her faithful companion, a huge cryptic dog with intriguing eyes; (almost as if he can speak), and the fun of creating unicorns as characters... not the fluffy type, (which I know are lovely) but I wanted real, rich, mighty and powerful beings that still remained un-cliché. (Like the ones I wish had visited me when I was a girl.) Enjoy!

Wish – The Legend

How could I possibly have written a unicorn series without a legend? Impossible! Unicorns are fascinating... but who knows how many legends there are about them? Early Chinese history refers to a mythical hooved creature that radiated beautiful colours, had a voice like chiming bells, sported a mane, and lived for a thousand years. In India, reports of a huge red beast with a single horn which was terribly shy and shunned mankind. The list goes on, as do the stories that unicorns would approach only maidens; of them never harming a living thing and, of being hunted relentlessly by man. 'The Unicorns of Wish' first three books in the series revolve around my legend... and so the series begins.

The Third Wish

Children's Books

Willful James goes nowhere without his ridiculous hat. But when the hat is found bedraggled and forsaken, the unicorns, Rielle, Pud and the First Ones stand on the horns of a dilemma. With no time to lose, do they save Wish or find their friend? -----------------------------------------------------------Set free from an ages-old jinx, Willful James is granted an offering of unthinkable power. But, when in anger he slights the honour, his stubborn refusal will endanger not only the unicorns but also Rielle and the trusty group who risk all to save Wish and the outside world. At the eleventh hour the faithful Pud unlocks Will’s brooding heart, yet, in a twist of fate, it will be Rielle who stands on the brink of making her greatest dream come true.

The Unicorn's Kiss

This is a big moment in The Third Wish... one where all things will change forever. Such is the power of the Unicorn's Kiss...

Finally... safety.

We've all had those slippery descents, the ones that form or shake us and mould us for our future life. Willful James will have his epiphany soon...

The dark of the storm...

Willful James goes nowhere without his ridiculous hat. But when the hat is found bedraggled and forsaken, the unicorns, Rielle, Pud and the First Ones stand on the horns of a dilemma. With no time to lose, do they save Wish or find their friend?

The dark of the storm shall whisper your name...

Plunged into dark places, Willful James seems to stumble again and again as he side-steps into the shadows... Will is one of my favourite characters to write. One day, he's going to get more than one thing right....

The Legend of Wish

Sometimes, the creatures in myth and legend are as real as if we could see them with our own eyes. But it seems there's always a hunter who steals their glory and power ....

Not all unicorn stories are pink and fluffy

It seems that whether you live in our world, or another, there is always a grand ego who wants all the power and who will stop at nothing to make it theirs. But when evil steals the wand of Unicorns, there are surprises in store. Gentle things may appear to be powerless... but things are not always as they seem.

Not everything is as it seems...

Each of us sees the world around us in our own unique way. Some of us see spangles and some of us see stars. And to others, they are neither spangles, or stars, but bricks.

Who is the enemy?

Trust is a delicate thing. When we lose it we may trust no one until an unexpected series of events pulls us through a maze to belatedly reveal what we should have known all along.

When the unthinkable happens

Life is filled with the unthinkable and that's why writers must write. Even unicorns sometimes meet with the unthinkable.

The power of 'she'....

There is nothing more powerful than the moment when evil discovers, surprised, that it is not all-knowing, and, perhaps, not invincible.

The long misunderstood 'wish'

Fairy tales often talk about wishing. We wish for something every day. But when I wrote the first three books of The Unicorns of Wish and gave them their titles, I had already decided not to write to a twee formula, but to an audience of children and other age groups that needed a broader perspective of the wild ride of fantasy meeting the consequences of our actions. Too serious for kid's books? Nope, not judging by how much they gobble the books up and ask for more in the series! Children love watching their characters face moral dilemmas in books. They thrive on flawed characters. And so do the rest of us. The messy stuff helps us to figure out our own minds, thoughts and actions. So, as Rielle says at the end of Book #1 – Wish, ‘…this is real life, isn’t it?’ In some ways, that’s the best part of writing and reading fantasy; in a different time and place, with wonderful characters you may never quite meet in real life, you get to explore the ‘what if’ factor and to face yourself.

Wish Again

Children's Books

The Ritual of Return tested, Candela stood tall. Then, she strode to the doorway of the Tower and briefly paused. The gathering held its breath. Perhaps Candela would change her mind. Just once, she looked back. “Destiny we are meeting,” she breathed.------------------------------------------------- Going back to Wish was the last thing on Rielle’s mind! Sometimes, we just make mistakes...

There's nothing like hindsight! Poor Willful James... his hindsight causes all sorts of interesting ups and downs. I love a character that tugs at my thoughts and makes me think. As Will's character builds in The Unicorns of Wish, book two, Wish Again, there's a real sense that somewhere inside all of us, there lurks a bit of a Willful James. Is he a villain? Or is he not?

Regret, regret, regret...

I love writing Will's character. I mean, who doesn't have a secret and perhaps a secret regret? Within a character, a writer can decide how much that character will change their ways, or even if they choose to do so; whether they will do all in their power to heal the past, or is the past something they will never face. And importantly, how do their actions and decisions affect their fellow characters, the plot, and the spiral of events. Will isn't evil... or is he?

Wish

Children's Books

From the mists of time there comes a long-lost tale of unicorns... When a homeless girl named Rielle and her dog, Pud, stumble into a wild and untamed forest, they meet the otherworldly unicorns of Wish. Drawn into an ancient and forgotten legend, Rielle and Pud become entangled in an epic adventure of mystery, fate and consequences. Rielle discovers that when dreams unfold and magic happens, there can be no turning back! In a forest of green and gold and in a time of mystery and hope, Rielle and the faithful Pud journey deep into the unknown, and stumble into a world they could never have imagined.

Book Bubbles from Wish

Oh, those mysterious storytelling strangers!

I'll admit to being selfish when I wrote The Unicorns of Wish. The Unicorns of Wish is a story I wanted to read when I was a child, so I wrote bits of it when I was a girl and then it took me a while, but eventually I 'really' wrote it. There's a bit of truth in that a writer writes for themselves first... but it's great fun when everyone else shares in the journey! I love writing. I love writing this series. And now book four has been released: HOPE -The Ambit of Light. Enjoy!
