Amoran

Science Fiction & Fantasy

Amoran Synopsis

KERRIN SCOTT longs to jumpstart the creative life she put on hold to juggle her husband’s sixteen-hour workdays, her own job, and her kids’ never-ending parade of after-school activities. But the GUARDIANS on AMORAN, desperate for her help, are about to hijack what little free time Kerrin has. They send an energy-encoded letter to Earth to safely activate her hidden memories and restore her unique abilities. But after several failed attempts to read it, the letter is destroyed, filling Kerrin with a strange sense of loss and longing.
Loss morphs into astonishment when a Guardian materializes in her kitchen to persuade an incredulous Kerrin that it’s her job to save the SEVENTH VORTEX—and Earth and Amoran—from destruction. Right, she says, then asks him where the hidden camera is. Miffed by her flippancy, he returns to Amoran, and Kerrin decides this must all be a hallucination or a bad dream. That ends when she’s sucked up through a swirling energy portal in her family room and lands on Amoran, where she meets Master Guardian, ELIASSER. Yes, he insists; she is crucial to saving the vortex. But the dimensional difference between the two worlds means all contact must be carefully handled. Without the letter’s energy key to awaken her true identity, they will have to speed up the process, a dangerous and lengthy proposition, even with the Guardians’ ability to stretch time.
Kerrin, still skeptical, is sent back to Earth, where she finds a book with vanishing instructions on how to access the portal. She attempts it, but nearly dies when the vortex convulses in an energy inversion. Guardian MAKASHANNAR saves Kerrin by blending his energy with hers. The unexpected sweetness of this catches Kerrin by surprise and leaves her wanting more.
Kerrin spends a whirlwind three days on Amoran, delighting in its lush wonders—verdant forests, boats propelled by thought, sentient flowers, and perpetually sunny days. When it’s time to leave, Eliasser drops a bomb: Kerrin will have to secretly visit Amoran every day to prepare for the precisely timed vortex repair job—the Reparention.
Unsure how this will work—she barely has time for laundry!—Kerrin begins ping-ponging between the worlds on her lunch breaks, where time-stretching gives her five days on Amoran. But juggling obligations in two dimensions wreaks havoc on her Earth life, and not just from the lies she tells to hide her off-world visits from family, friends, and coworkers. The Amoran energy she brings home is corrupting her husband’s easygoing temperament, turning him angry and agitated. Further complicating things, as Kerrin reconnects with her past life on Amoran, she finds herself increasingly drawn to Makashannar, who has been curiously aloof since rescuing her.
Those concerns pale when the Guardians reveal her role during the Reparention. She and Makashannar must transform into balls of light, merge together, then shoot a joint bolt of stabilizing energy inside the vortex at its most volatile moment. Even if they succeed, she and Makashannar may not survive.
With these high stakes, Kerrin works up the courage to confess to Makashannar that she is falling in love with him. He offers his own confession—they are Twin Lights, souls with complementary energy frequencies, so it makes sense that she, being from Earth, would feel this way about him. But when he also reveals that his vortex-created body cannot feel physical desire, Kerrin is actually relieved; she’s never intended to step out on her husband.
Kerrin’s dual life continues to take its toll, with her marriage crumbling further after a disastrous Thanksgiving where her husband becomes verbally abusive. Disgusted and overwhelmed, she returns to Amoran for her longest visit yet—eight Earth hours: forty days on Amoran.
When she arrives, Makashannar experiences a life-threatening seizure. Guided by intuition, Kerrin saves him, but learns an astounding secret—Makashannar is now capable of sexual expression.
The FORESEERS—ethereal, prophetic beings—transport Makashannar and Kerrin to their domain, where they tell Kerrin that while she will one day lead Makashannar from darkness, she will “experience a physical death” during the Reparention. In return for this sacrifice, the Foreseers offer the couple a gift: they may now share their transcendent love physically. Kerrin, still reluctant to violate her marriage vows, but knowing she will soon die, finally gives in to her feelings.
After an incredible night, Kerrin and Makashannar awaken to bad news: the Reparention is beginning. They barely make it to the Amoran portal just as the now chaotic vortex pulls all eight Guardians inside. Narrowly avoiding disaster, she and Makashannar successfully merge, and the other Guardians manage to escape back through the portal—all except Eliasser, who is grievously injured.
Unable to stop to help him, Kerrin and Makashannar dispense their energy bolt, blasting them apart in the process. As their released energy continues to build inside the vortex, Kerrin, accepting her imminent death, feeds Eliasser her life-force, then propels him toward Amoran. In a turnabout, Makashannar fights his way back to Kerrin, infuses her with his life-force and sends her spiraling toward the Earth portal as the stabilizing explosion occurs. Kerrin feels Makashannar’s immense pain as if it were her own, then a brilliant light fills her with peace.
On Earth, Kerrin’s husband finds her sprawled on their deck, lifeless. Revived by paramedics, she is distant and numb when he questions whether their marriage can be salvaged. Even though his easygoing self has returned, Kerrin can’t give him an answer—her heart aches for her lost Twin Light.
As Christmas approaches, Eliasser visits. Thrilled to see him, Kerrin recalls the Foreseers’ prediction that she will lead Makashannar out of darkness. Maybe he isn’t dead, she suggests. She’s eager to return “home” to Amoran and begin searching for him, but Eliasser tells her the Foreseers decree she must remain on Earth for now.
Disappointed at first, Kerrin acquiesces, and in choosing to rebuild her marriage, regains hope for her Earth life.
