Deeta Richards has never seen the outside world. Before she was born a banking crisis brought civilization to an end and now no one leaves the safety of the compounds unless they need to, but Deeta still dreams of seeing more than the building she was born in. Tom is in the guard, this group are the only people that the tribal elders allow to leave the compound and Tom knows only too well that Deeta could never survive the harshness that exists outside. Then tragedy strikes and Deeta and her sister Jan find themselves captured by a hostile tribe. Why does Tom know so much about these people? And why do they know so much about him? As this mystery draws to a climax, they discover that their friend Tom is not quite what he seems...
I thought a long time about which excerpt to begin with, and this one was the part that stood out to me. This is THE beginning, the first scene that Tom and Deeta share. For me it encapsulates their relationship, and the roles they play within the tribe. You know after reading this section that Tom has always looked after Deeta, always been there for her, the proverbial big brother figure in her life. You realise that he is a soldier, that he's seen terrible things and that he's had to make some tough choices. You also see how hopelessly naive Deeta is, she's kind and generous, but she has no idea how the world works. She sees the good in everyone, even if it isn't there. They are polar opposites, but they need each other to survive. Deeta needs Tom's cynicism to show her that not everyone can be trusted. And Tom needs Deeta's innocence to remind him what he's fighting to protect.
