A Story about Refugees (7-10 Year Old Readers

Around the world there are some 26 million refugees. These are people who have fled from their homes because of war, genocide, kidnapping, sexual exploitation and trafficking, forced child labor, etc. Parents have chosen to flee in search of safety for their children and themselves. Their journeys are dangerous and often they become the targets of many unscrupulous people. And sometimes, when they arrive at their destination, families are separated from each other. As an author, my challenge was how to present the plight of the refugee and asylum seeker to the 7 to 10 year old reader, i.e. without traumatizing them. With he beautiful illustrations by Mary Manning, "Hope and Freckles: Fleeing to a Better Forest" is my attempt to achieve this goal. I plan to have a series of Hope and Freckles books addressing other challenges the face.
