Strong Girls Travel: AJ's Friendship at Shenandoah

Children's Books

Strong Girls Travel is a book series showcasing a young girl’s adventures in America’s National Parks. Each book finds her learning something new about herself, her world, and her part in it all.

Take a trip with AJ and her new friend, Jo, to Shenandoah National Park. When Jo is sensitive to bright lights and big sounds at school, AJ puts herself in the friendship as the “fixer.” But what if that’s not what Jo needs? And when they go to the park, will AJ be able to control every sunny view and loud waterfall to help Jo relax? Isn’t that what a friend would try to do?

Ride together along Skyline Drive and learn to notice small details in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains. Sit with AJ at Shenandoah as she learns what it might take to be a true friend.

Real Life Adventure Behind the Story

When I write the Strong Girls Travel books, I head to the park for my own adventure. I hike, kayak, or explore in my own way, and then let the world show me a thing or two about itself. That's where each story idea and lesson comes from. In adventuring at Shenandoah, I was with a friend who was moving faster than me. She was able to do more, but she didn't make me feel slow or guilty about it. And I realized that she could have - she could have tried to "fix" me or control our hiking trail choices. But she didn't. And that's where the idea for this story came about. AJ is a friendly kid, but has to realize here that she doesn't have to be the fixer. And I think this is a good lesson for us all to learn - not only how to support someone who doesn't adventure quite like we do, but also how to advocate for ourselves, like Jo does. When girls support girls, everyone wins. And that's what Strong Girls Travel is all about.
